When Andrew got ready for work one Friday morning, he announced to his wife that he finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Andrew felt nervous and apprehensive as he thought about the upcoming showdown. What if Mr. Larchmont refuses to grant his request? Andrew had worked so hard in the last 18 months and landed some great accounts for Braer and Hopkins Advertising Agency. Of course, he deserves a wage increase.
The thought of walking into Larchmont's office left Andrew weak in the knees. Late in the afternoon he finally mustered up the courage to approach his superior. To his delight and surprise, the ever-frugal Harvey Larchmont agreed to give Andrew a raise! Andrew arrived home that evening to a beautiful table set with their best china, and candles lit. His wife, Tina had prepared an exquisite meal including his favorite dishes. Immediately he figured someone from the office tipped her off!
Next to his plate Andrew found a beautiful lettered note. It was from his wife. It read: "Congratulations, my love! I knew you'd get the raise! I prepared this dinner to show just how much I love you. I am so proud of your accomplishments!" He read it and stopped to reflect on how sensitive and caring Tina was.
After dinner, Andrew was on his way to the kitchen to get dessert and he observed that a second card had slipped out of Tina's pocket on to the ceramic floor. He bent forward to retrieve it. He read: "Don't worry about not getting the raise! You deserve it anyway! You are a wonderful provider and I prepared this dinner to show you just how much I love you even though you did not get the increase."
Suddenly tears swelled in Andrew's eyes. Total acceptance! Tina's support for him was not conditional upon his success at work….. Story adapted by Louis Lapides.
Total Acceptance is to be loved unconditionally, no matter who we are or what we do or might have done. Acceptance brings in a sense of belonging, it drives away loneliness, it removes fears of rejection, it helps a person sta`nd up when they have miserably failed and it brings in fresh hope to life. People do all sorts of stuff to feel accepted in society. They’ll spend good amount of money buying big label jeans and dresses, go in for weird trendy looks, live beyond their means by buying stuff to just score a point over others. Here’s a great quote that I have heard,
“Too many people spend money they haven't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people they don't like”… Will Rogers
Deep within each of us we have this earnest desire to be accepted. The fear of rejection, fear of being lonely is too big a fear for us to handle. The fear of rejection is often softened when we know someone loves us regardless of our success or failure. We tend to show acceptance in our relationships but most of the times it is conditio`nal. To show conditional acceptance is easy but to show unconditional acceptance is very difficult. Not every human being is the same and every person has their own set of weakness. Most people would preach about the mistakes and weakness in other people’s lives. But this kind of preaching will always be met with rebellion. John Maxwell quotes
“People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
Total acceptance is a direct result of unconditional love. If we can just accept a person as they are and if we show that we care for them then there is a bright chance of that person to open up and be willing to change or mend their ways. Total acceptance can help people start their life fresh all over again. Total acceptance in today’s world can save many marriages from breaking up; it can keep many teenagers away from addictions to drugs and from having rebellious attitudes. It can help people get out of depressions and frustrations. It can stop many people from committing suicide. A great deal of our problem in today’s world can be tackled by just meeting this need of mankind and that is TOTAL ACCEPTANCE.
I would say Food Clothing and Shelter are the basic needs of mankind but Unconditional Love & Acceptance is truly the greatest need of all times.
God Bless You
