I learnt in school that, “Man is a social animal”. Never did I understand it so clearly like I do now. We were never created to live in isolation but to live together in a society. In today’s world, the focus has moved away from a social life to that of an individual life. “I”, “Me”, “Mine”, is the mantra of our living today. All of us are just interested in securing our own future and what we fail to realize is that our future is linked to other people who co-exist with us on this planet. This is true, whether we like it or not. We have no choice in this matter. If we truly love ourselves and our family and if we desire a better future then our investments cannot be just in ourselves but also in the social environment where we exist and grow.
We cannot expect to live in this world and not be affected with what’s happening around us. Very shortly, we too will get affected. Millions of children are dying because of hunger, they don’t have access to clean drinking water, they have to opt out or never get a chance to go to school and they are our next generation. If we impact their lives today, then, they will grow up to be better human beings with morals and values. If we correct the upcoming generation then the future will be better. If this generation goes forward with pain and hurt in their life then it will ultimately create more of dysfunctional people and it sure will make this world a darker place.

Here’s a great story which explains it better ;
There once was a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blue ribbon. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his corn seed with his neighbors. "How can you afford to share your best corn seed with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?" the reporter asked. "Why sir," said the farmer, "didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn."
The farmer truly is very much aware of the connectedness of life. As seen in the story, for the farmer to have a good crop, he had to ensure that his neighbors too were growing quality corn and so it is with our lives, if we want to succeed, we need to help others succeed too. One of my senior bosses on friendship day selected a couple of his friends who were not economically well off and sponsored their children’s studies for one full year. I would call that as a great gesture towards friends but it is also a smart investment in the lives of all their children who will benefit out of this. Those children, if provided for education today, can surely grow up to be successful and provide their family with a better life. I strongly agree with this saying,
“Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”
If today we don’t meet the needs of people, tomorrow we will be surrounded by desperate people who will fight with us for their survival. The lesson for us from this post is that, If we want to be happy then we need to help others find contentment in their lives. Here’s a great quote from the bible
“Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything. The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed”…. Proverbs 11:-24-25
God Bless you
